What is Shadow Mode?
Definition
A deployment stage in which an AI system runs on real work and records what it would have done, without acting on it. The output is compared against the humans still doing the task, which produces the evidence needed to justify autonomy later. Shadow mode is how an automation earns trust before it is given control, and skipping it is a common reason pilots never reach production.
Business Use Cases
- De-risking automation rollout
- Building operator trust
- Accuracy baselining
